Zillah Minx and Sid of Rubella Ballet, the day-glo clad anarcho punk band, proudly stood in the queue of black at that strange Peter Murphy gig at Dingwalls and told me all about their encounter with a ghost at Leipzig. During the on-stage spiritual attack, Sid collapsed and later on other members of the band and crew had breathing difficulties too, some of whom also collapsed. It turned out that it wasn't an evil gang of skinheads attacking them with tear gas but a ne'er do well ghosty.
The band are still gigging regularly, I saw them at The Underworld in Camden and it was a really good fun night. They've released their back catalogue in the form of two CD's called ‘Anarchy In The UV' and ‘Never Mind The Day-Glo' so you can buy a piece of punk history.
‘Anarchy In The UV' gives you the 12" version of Money Talks' and their 1st album ‘At Last It's Play Time' whilst ‘Never Mind The Day-Glo' covers the period from 1984 onwards and consists of 20 re-mastered tracks including 12" singles of ‘42f' and ‘Arctic Flowers' as well as the albums ‘If' and ‘At The End Of The Rainbow', both CD's come with a 12 page booklet containing rare photos and the band's history, designed by Zillah Minx and Sid Truelove.
They're available from Overground records, on-line at iTunes, Amazon and all other leading digital distribution sites as well as your local record shops, on CD only. http://www.overgroundrecords.co.uk/
As well as the back catalogue, the re-mastered BBC Peel Sessions from 1992 and 1993 have been made available to listen to at: http://www.reverbnation.com/rubellaballet
‘She's A Punk Rocker UK', directed by Zillah Minx, is a fascinating hour long documentary film about women in punk and what it was like to be in the movement, how the typical female role changed, fashion, politics; the lot.
It's quite an eye-opening film and the list of women taking part in the film reads like the who's who of punk: Vi Subversa from Poison Girls, Gay Advert, Poly Styrene and her bodyguard Mary, Julie Burchill, Honey Bane, Eve Libertine, Caroline Coon and Olga Orbit amongst others.
