Boston based Sewer Goddess is the work of Belialist and has become one of the more interesting and exciting talents to emerge from the US scene. Self described as "Like the chaos and filth that collects in the gutters and the cracks in the sidewalks. Like the sadness and shamed lust of gloryholes, like the hum of fluorescent light sliding through the grates of a killing floor" Sewer Goddess has slowly raised its profile through a host of splits, cassettes, vinyl and, more recently, a full length on Malignant Records sub-label Black Plagve.
What separates Sewer Goddess from its contemporaries is the amalgamation of styles; a combination of noise, power electronics and death industrial which frees it from any scene constraints, allowing Belialist to create whatever Sewer Goddess needs to be, even if that's sludgey doom as on the split with Diseased Oblivion.
This touches upon one of two distinctive aspects of Sewer Goddess. Firstly the sound is filthy, lo-fi, not in a production sense but in the ability to capture the gutter and desperation where this project thematically sits. Which leads onto the second aspect: that of imagery and aesthetics which are in harmony with the sounds to a degree lacking in a lot of artists today. Predominantly black and white, cut-up montages or a beautifully canned rear as on the "Dejection Veil" cassette, each evokes the themes that Sewer Goddess touches upon.
So where to start? The easiest place is the full-length "With Dirt You Are One" simply because it is still in print though the aforementioned Dejection Veil cassette is worth hunting down. Verdigis features some of the best packaging of a Sewer Goddess release though with a first press of just 73 copies good luck in getting hold of one. A second press is now available though without the screen printed cover. Those listeners more comfortable with metal orientated music might want to start with the split w/Diseased Oblivion but otherwise hunt around, check out the myspace link below and discover an interesting artist well worth supporting.
