Comprising members of some of US hardcore's elite, such as Terror, Shai Hulud and As Friends Rust, On Bodies are no strangers to the scene. The quintet have a sound reminiscent of early New York Hardcore, with some faster, Outbreak like, sections thrown in just for kicks. The five piece are set to release their demo/EP 'Planet Hospice' via Eulogy Recordings, and we caught up with vocalist, and former As Friends Rust man, Damien Moyal, to find out what's cracking.
Who's in the band/what do they do?
“I'm Damien Moyal, vocalist. Rich Thurston plays bass. Chad Kishick and Chip Walbert play guitar, and on drums is Julio Marin.”
How did On Bodies get together?
“A couple of years ago, Rich and I (we'd been in Culture together in the mid/late 90s) tossed around the idea of doing a project together, and for whatever reason it fizzled. He then started hatching plans to do something with Chip, who had lined up Chad and Julio to fill out the roster. They hadn't settled on a vocalist, and I really liked the stuff that was being demoed, so I sort of waltzed back into the picture.”
How would you describe your sound?
“It's perhaps the most straightforward, no-frills hardcore any of us have done. Not much of a metallic slant, and not a whole lot of melody. The songs are angry, mean, and - for the most part - fairly short and to-the-point. Comparisons have been drawn to Burn, Judge, Sheer Terror and Cro-Mags. Flattering, but I'm not sure I hear that yet.”
How does On Bodies differ from your previous bands?
“As Friends Rust was very melodic, and leaned more toward the punk/rock n roll side of the hardcore spectrum. Morning Again, Culture and Shai Hulud were, contrarily, very much playing in metal territories, often to the point of showing very little hardcore at all. Terror, which Rich was in early on in the band's career, was perhaps the most comparable, although their much slicker and screamier. We suffer from raw, impatient recordings, and vocally I think we're less screamy.”
What do On Bodies have planned for 2012?
“We'll be playing a few shows here and there and releasing a 7" entitled ‘Megachurch’ before the summer on an undisclosed/undecided label. We're looking to get to Europe either this Fall or the following spring, assuming the Mayans were wrong.”
