MOTÖRHEAD
BIG TOP, LUNA PARK, SYDNEY
Walking to the Big Top venue through Luna Park is a surreal experience. The venue for tonights gig is in the middle of an amusement park which, as it’s Motörhead playing, is full of shambling metalheads, punks and bikers weaving their way past the closed down rides and locked up throw a ball and win a thing stalls. It has a strange almost post apocalyptic feel. Once inside the venue, which isn’t, disappointingly, that much like a bigtop (no sawdust ring, clowns, lions etc) the thing that captures your eye is the giant winged Motörhead logo spanning the back wall, we all know why were here, but it still makes it a little bit special.
When Lemmy and co stride on stage there is no doubt what is about to happen, he reaches for the mic and says “We are Motörhead, and we like rock n roll” and with that simple but honest introduction a double helping of classic ‘head is served with ‘Iron Fist” and ‘Stay Clean’. As the fourth song is about to start Lemmy asks if it’s loud enough? Lemmy asks the audience, a resounding NO! comes back, so it gets louder! Old people are supposed to complain about noise not enhance it! But then not every post 60 year old is a member of the loudest rock n roll band on the planet. They seem to do no wrong, Phil Campbell, with his ‘Welsh Wanker’ guitar strap - nice touch, throws out riff after riff of pure joy as Lemmy’s bass rumbles along and Mickkey Dee pounds away relentlessly (both Mikkey and Phil both do a surprisingly good solo spot each too). The set sweeps along scooping up tracks past and present until it’s time for the Motörhead anthems - ‘Ace Of Spades’ and ‘Overkill’ round the night off in splendid fashion. They may have been around for ever but Motörhead still kick arse, and yes, they do do play the best rock and fucking roll in the universe.
