We love Kat Gillham over at Terrorizer HQ. Not only is she the mistress of Impaled Northern Crust Horde WINDS OF GENOCIDE but she also promotes local metal at Durham's Grindhouse night and not only that but has the best taste music north of the Watford gap (I take care of the South - ha ha). After having too many conversations over Facebook about Dark Angel, Mortuary Drape and The Devil's Blood I thought "I HAVE to give her a band of the week blog"... and she did done me proud. Prepare for more of these in the weeks to come and do yourself a favour, check this out www.myspace.com/windsofgenocide
KAT'S BAND OF THE WEEK: MISANTROPIC
Misantropic (yes it is spelt like this!) hail from Umeå, a small University city in the cold north eastern wastes of Sweden but which has a very vibrant HC-Punk-Metal scene which has already produced some well-known names within the worldwide extreme music scene (Refused, Nocturnal Rites, Bewitched to name a few aswell as some awesome lesser known bands such as fellow Crust/D beat punks Auktion and Personkrets 3:1).
Misantropic originally formed out of the ashes of the aforementioned Crust Punk band Personkrets 3:1 a few years ago and originally had a male vocalist called Johannes who left the band after the release of their first official studio recording which was a split 7" EP with fellow Swedes Deathrace. He was replaced by a female vocalist called Gerda Berglund and she brought a different edge to the band with her early Sacrilege, After the Bombs style vocal attack which compliment the music perfectly.
Misantropic have just had their debut full length album 'Insomnia' unleashed by Swedish DIY Crust/Punk label Halvfabrikat Records, which is a raging assault of pummeling D beats and double bass (provided by the mysteriously named Zoid who is also drummer in black thrash band Bewitched), blazing metallic thrashing crusty punked up riffs courtesy of Eken and Rille, the driving bulldozing bass of Matte and the angry pissed off vocals of Gerda that spit venom. (there are also some male backing vocals in parts).
The band cite such bands as Sacrilege, After The Bombs, Consume, Hellshock, Extinction Of Mankind, Nausea( NYC), Slayer, Detestation, Hellbastard, Discharge, State Of Fear, Motörhead, Warcollapse amongst others as influences and some of those influences can be clearly heard on this album.
Lyrically the album touches upon subjects that are usually associated with bands in the Crust-Punk scene from the vegan animal rights themed 'Born To Die', to the burn the greedy profit hungry rich people themed 'Raise The Gallows', which has the Awesome chorus of "ARM THE HOMELESS, ARM THE POOR, RAISE THE GALLOWS, START THE WAR" to the War/Genocide themed 'Holocaust' and the Anti-Religious statement of 'Lord Of War', each vocal line spat out with such power, anger and vitriol.
From the opening of first song 'Man Into Beast' and raging Slayer-esque 'Born To Die' to the Hardrockin Disfear-Motörhead-esque 'Raise The Gallows' via the brooding 'Holocaust' to the pounding closing track 'A Life Lost' this album dosn't let up the energy levels one bit from start to finish, unleashing a catchy aural assault one after the other and at only 7 tracks long will leave you wanting more as it did with myself
